In a rapidly changing world of technical jargon, many terms are popping up in everyday conversations and the non-technical professional might be overwhelmed. Podcast, blog, IM, domain, URL… the lingo can make your head spin. However, one such term, RSS, has frequently been showing up everywhere and seeping into the world of Online Marketing as well. For business professionals today, the terminology might be a daunting task to keep up with, but utilizing the Web to your advantage doesn’t have to be.

RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, is a Web format that allows for certain information to be pulled from multiple Web sites into a central location. What exactly does that mean?

Well, for marketers it means that RSS can be used to either:

A.) Keep prospects up to date with information that your business is constantly updating, like press releases or events.

B.) Increase returning visitors to your site by setting up an RSS feed to display current, pertinent information from other Web sites on your Web site.

For example, let’s say that you manage a local community Web site. An RSS reader could be set up within your Web site to display items like current headlines from the local newspaper Web site or school closings from the local school district site. Also, if sections of your Web site were RSS-compatible, like the news and events section, community members who have RSS readers could keep up to date with local information easier, and encouraged to visit your Web site more often.

RSS feeds are created in a language called XML (or eXtensible Markup Language), a technology already used for various other purposes on and off the Web. Since it is so widespread, many Web developers find it relatively easy to set up these indexes on existing sites. Not only can you keep your existing patrons coming back more often, it can help boost SEO to increase new site traffic by providing another way for Web users to experience your content.

There are many different reasons to use RSS feeds today, from making your Web site’s articles easily accessible to a wider audience, to making it easy for clients to keep up with your company’s blog. The possibilities are endless and so are the sites that are adding RSS everyday.

The best way to learn about how RSS works is to setup your own personal RSS reader. There are a number of readers out there, an example of which is Google’s new Reader. To try it, go to [http://reader.google.com/ ]http://reader.google.com (you need a Gmail account) and follow the instructions — it is easy to setup and starts out with a quick video tour. Once you do this, you’ll have a feel for how RSS works from the perspective of someone using it to view your content, and how setting up RSS capabilities on your business Web site can help you boost Web traffic.

Social bookmarking sites generally organize their content using tags. Social bookmarking sites are an increasingly popular way to locate, classify, rank, and share Internet resources through the practice of tagging and inferences drawn from grouping and analysis of tags.

History

The concept of shared online bookmarking dates back to April 1996 with the launch of itList.com. Within the next three years online bookmark services became competitive, with venture-backed companies like Backflip, Blink,[citation needed] Clip2, Hotlinks, Quiver, and others entering the market. Lacking viable models for making money, most of this early generation of social bookmarking companies failed as the dot-com bubble burst. The contemporary concepts of social bookmarking and tagging took root with the launch of the web site oneview in 1999[1] and del.icio.us, in September of 2003.

Functional Overview

In a social bookmarking system, users store lists of Internet resources, which they find useful. Often, these lists are publicly accessible, and other people with similar interests can view the links by category, tags, or even randomly. Some social bookmarking systems allow for privacy on a per-bookmark basis.

They also categorize their resources by the use of informally assigned, user-defined keywords or tags (see folksonomy). Most social bookmarking services allow users to search for bookmarks which are associated with given “tags”, and rank the resources by the number of users which have bookmarked them. Many social bookmarking services also have implemented algorithms to draw inferences from the tag keywords that are assigned to resources by examining the clustering of particular keywords, and the relation of keywords to one another.

Advantages

This system has several advantages over traditional automated resource location and classification software, such as search engine spiders. All tag-based classification of Internet resources (such as web sites) is done by human beings, who understand the content of the resource, as opposed to software which algorithmically attempts to determine the meaning of a resource. This provides for semantically classified tags, which are hard to find with contemporary search engines.

Additionally, as people bookmark resources that they find useful, resources that are of more use are bookmarked by more users. Thus, such a system will “rank” a resource based on its perceived utility. This is arguably a more useful metric for end users than other systems which rank resources based on the number of external links pointing to it.

Automatic Notification

Since the classification and ranking of resources is a continuously evolving process, many social bookmarking services allow users to subscribe to syndication feeds (see RSS) based on tags, or collection of tag terms. This allows subscribers to become aware of new resources for a given topic, as they are noted, tagged, and classified by other users.

Disadvantages

There are drawbacks to such tag-based systems as well: no standard set of keywords (also known as controlled vocabulary), no standard for the structure of such tags (e.g. singular vs. plural, capitalization, etc.), mistagging due to spelling errors, tags that can have more than one meaning, unclear tags due to synonym/antonym confusion, highly unorthodox and “personalized” tag schemas from some users, and no mechanism for users to indicate hierarchical relationships between tags (e.g. a site might be labeled as both cheese and cheddar, with no mechanism that might indicate that cheddar is a refinement or sub-class of cheese).

The separate (but related) tagging and social bookmarking services are, however, evolving rapidly, and these shortcomings could possibly be addressed in the near future.

By Donna Gunter

Listening to podcasts isn’t something I enjoy or take time for, quite frankly. I’m a visual learner and prefer to read something rather than listen to it, as I find reading a much quicker way to gather the info that I need. However, with the proliferation of audio listening devices, like the whole iPod family and other mp3 players, I have to acknowledge that I’m in the minority, I believe. The world is listening to a wide variety of audio files, much more so than ever before in history, and I need to get on the bandwagon or be lost in the dust.

What is a podcast, anyway? A podcast is an audio file that you create in .mp3 format that is uploaded with an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) file to your server for your target market to download on any number of programs created to receive or subscribe to your audio file so that they can listen to it at their leisure on their computer or a personal mp3 device.

Why should you create a podcast? I think it serves as a marketing tool for the solo service professional, who might want to do one of the following:

–create an Internet radio show or talk show in which you create content-rich broadcasts for your target market

–conduct a teleclass series in which you interview experts who have solutions to problems faced by your target market

–promote a printed book, ebook, or CD/DVD series by releasing promotional snippets to a wider audience

–provide short and valuable expert tips to your target market (my Get More Clients Online podcast consists of the weekly article I write for my newsletter)

Many podcasts are about an hour in length, especially when they consist of recordings of radio shows or teleclasses. However, I think that the listening threshold for most people is about 10 minutes. So, that means that your podcast needs to be 10 minutes or less in length. If it’s longer, you really have to grab their attention in the first 10 minutes to keep them listening for the full amount of time.

Good content and a good speaking voice are key to maintaining interest. Don’t make your podcast one long advertisement for your services or products — share some useful information with your target market to help them solve their problems. And, you need to have a good speaking voice. Nothing is worse than listening to someone read a speech with a monotone delivery. So, for maximum impact when you record your podcast (especially if you’re just recording yourself), get up and walk around, smile, gesture, or do whatever you normally do when you deliver a speech. Modulate your voice, much in the same way that you would when you have a 1:1 conversation with someone — put feeling and emotion into your words. I pretend like I’m talking to my best friend, and that helps me with a lively delivery.

What are the steps to creating a podcast?

1. Listen to a few podcasts to get a feel for what others are doing. To listen, you’ll need a podcatcher (podcast reader), which permits you to subscribe to podcasts in the same way you subscribe to blogs. I favor iTunes as my podcatcher of choice, which is a free online download. You’ll also need to find podcasts, and the quickest way to do that is via podcast directories, which include the iTunes store. Podcast Alley, one of the most popular podcasting sites, has a large podcast directory, and Yahoo Podcasts has a podcast search. To find others, simply search online for “podcast directory.”

2. Plan your podcast. Who is your target market? What do they want to listen to? How will your podcast be unique from others in your industry? What’s your format (interview others, host a teleclass, or record yourself)? How long will your podcast be? How frequently will you deliver your podcasts?

3. Record your podcast. Many people choose to record their podcast with a free piece of software called Audacity. It has an easy learning curve and advanced features for more experienced podcasters. Mac users might want to check out Garage Band. For best recording sound, don’t use the microphone that came with your computer or that is built into your laptop. You’ll want to get a more professional one, such as the ones offered at Plantronics or Radio Shack.

4. Save and upload your podcast to your server. Once you’ve created your podcast in an mp3 file, now you have to save it and upload it to a server via an FTP program (like CuteFTP) so that it’s readily available. You can upload it to your website, or use one of the many podcasting hosting services available. The problem with uploading it to your website is that audio files are space hogs, and you can quickly exhaust all the storage capacity of your hosting account, not to mention your monthly bandwidth capacity if your podcast is popular and is downloaded frequently. That’s why I use a fee-based audio service hosting company, Audio Acrobat, which offers me generous storage and bandwidth capacity for a semi-annual fee. Another popular podcast hosting company is Hipcast.com.

5. Create your podcast feed. You can create your podcast feed from scratch, but I recommend you use a feed service to do so. If you use a podcasting hosting service, this feature is included in your service package. For everyone else, the quickest way to create your podcast feed is through Feedburner.com. This is the same service that creates RSS feeds for blogs. The advantage of creating your podcast feed from this site is that you can create a browser-friendly feed, track your circulation, and enhance your feed with its SmartCast technology.

6. Publish and promote your podcast. If you use a podcasting hosting service, the service will publish your podcast and notify various podcast directories about the availability of your new podcast. Or, you can enter the info directly into the major podcast directories. You’ll also want to promote the podcast on your website, blog, and in your email newsletter. One of the easiest ways to do this is to add feed subscription buttons (called chiclets) to your sites. You’ll have to cut and paste the HTML code into your templates to create the chiclets. You can get directions on how to publish subscription buttons from the various podcasters you want to feature. Lastly, you’ll want to create “album art” for your podcast, or a graphic representation that many podcatchers upload with the mp3 file. Album art may be from 170×170 to 300×300 pixels square at 72 dpi. Any graphic designer can help you create this graphics file.

7. Make money from your podcast. Advertising on podcasts is still fairly new, but some companies like Fruitcast.com or PodcasterAds.com are places to start. Another option is to place Google Adsense listings on all of your sites listing your podcast, or seek sponsors for your podcasts, just like you would for a radio show.

Don’t let the audio world pass you by! Podcasting is a very inexpensive way of helping you get the word out about what you do and what you offer to the world.

Really Simple Syndication or RSS to a lot of people is a common mechanism used by many website owners and administrators to capture good traffic from potential visitors. Just as it a good marketing and promotional mechanism, making it as effective as it is substantial. Below are some of the ways on how you can excel in RSS:

1. Determine your targeted market. This is going to be necessary because you will be able to appropriately determine the right kind of sites that you can promote for your potential readers and visitors.

2. You can position and publish your web contents on some other related sites to make it more appealing thus producing more and more possible traffic.

3. Make sure that what you give your readers is something that is worthy of their time and attention. Web contents that are highly reliable and useful are deemed essential and beneficial. Stick with these kinds of content materials and you will never go wrong with your RSS mechanism.

4. If you are not sure about how and what sorts of things are necessary in order to perform the whole process of RSS, educate yourself first and do not pretend that you know all things.

5. When done with the RSS feeds you may want to have these feeds submitted to a more reputable and established aggregators. These well established aggregators would be a lot easier to locate and find rather than the not so familiar ones.

6. Be imaginative and innovative. You can include multimedia elements like graphics, moving objects, colorful texts to add up in the creativity of your RSS feeds.

7. Develop a content that is keyword-bound. The keywords on your content are essential elements that search engines are very sensitive about. When search engines are able to locate related keywords on your content, it makes the whole thing positively impacting.

Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary to some others is one of the fastest growing marketing tools in the online arena these days. This is a better way of informing your potential and targeted visitors for any updates that your website is having. Below are some of the effective ways you can successfully do your Rich Site Summary:

1. Make sure that you frequently update your website to make sure that your targeted clients will be enticed to pay your site a visit. The more updates that you bring into your site, the more curiosity it brings into the end of the client, the higher the chance to be getting a visit.

2. Create an RSS feed that is very appealing to your targeted visitors. You can do this by putting some mysterious and hanging statements that will make the RSS feed reader wonder about what you exactly mean. This curiosity will then possibly lead to a site visit.

3. You can use your RSS feeds to make promulgations about any recent happenings or events on your website. When these feeds become auto-updated on your targeted clients’ end, then you can potentially make an upsell.

4. You can inject audio feeds on your RSS. The injection of audio files on your RSS feeds will make it more innovative and appealing. This is something that is revolutionary and one of a kind.

5. One of the fastest growing trends in RSS feeds is the embedding of videos on it. Again, this is yet another milestone is the field of RSS. The usage of RSS video feeds is something bolder and experimental.

6. Create a good title for your RSS feeds. Create something that is very eye-catching and attractive. Remember, the main attraction of your RSS feeds is set initially at the title. So take advantage of this.

7. Be an all original RSS feeder. Plagiarism should never be a part of your system. At all times, you need to make sure that your RSS feeds are not copied and they come from your own.

What’s a blog? Well, it’s very much like an online dairy. This can be about and be used for anything at all, it can be used for news, reviews, products for a business etc. This is great as it helps the user stay in touch with the website with new and up to date information.

Ok, so we know what a blog is now. What on earth is that orange RSS icon I see everywhere! RSS is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines, and podcasts. An RSS document contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with web sites in an automated manner that can be piped into special programs or filtered displays.

RSS content can be read using software called an “RSS reader”, “feed reader” or an “aggregator”. The user subscribes to a feed by entering the feed’s link into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription process. The reader checks the user’s subscribed feeds regularly for new content, downloading any updates that it finds.

How do I get a blog or start a feed, with as much help as possible? First port of call would be FeedBurner - the leading provider of media distribution and audience engagement services for blogs and RSS feeds. Web-based tools help bloggers, podcasters and commercial publishers promote, deliver and profit from their content on the Web.

FeedBurner also offers the largest feed and blog advertising network that brings together an unprecedented caliber of content aggregated from the world’s most recognized media companies, and also A-list bloggers and blog networks and individual publishers from around the world.

Having said all this about Feedburner, although desktop aggregators are very popular because as they notice something new, they pop up windows on your desktop, and let you read items, the problem most people find is that when they are away from their PC or notepad they cannot stay up to date (especially when you are on holiday or away on business).

A server side aggregator would be a solution to this. It keeps track of what items you’ve read, and keeps checking up on your feeds no matter where you are. Whenever you want to see what’s new, you just bring up a web page and scan the newest items.

Why would I need a blog about kitchen appliances, for example? Well it would let you know when there is news about new appliances, so if you were having a new kitchen then subscribe to a feed a few weeks before and just wait for the latest info. So, go get yourself in the know and go start a blog, and sign up for some RSS feeds before the online world overtakes you even further…

Mr Havant has worked online and published several successful RSS feeds and Blogs on the kitchen appliances market. He has also maintained an optimized website with an RSS feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/internetkitchenappliances http://www.internetkitchenappliances.co.uk/feed http://kitchensappliances.blogspot.com/

Having a podcast is a fun and exciting way to grow your website traffic and connect with your customers. Just like your website, a podcast still needs to be marketed so people will find it. If you create a podcast and just stick it on the internet, it won’t attract much traffic.

There are many different ways to market your business podcast. If you’re looking at growing your list at the same time, you might opt to keep your podcast private. This is easy to do- set up a mailing list within your autoresponder for your podcast subscribers. Include the link to sign up on your website.

Should you already have a mailing list, simply send those members an email letting them know you are offering an exclusive podcast- encourage them to sign up. You can also ask your affiliates to spread awareness about your podcast, and offer them the opportunity to buy advertising.

When ready to release your new podcast, send an email to those that are on your list. Be sure to include the downloadable link within the email. You can also market other products or services of yours to this list as well.

Depending on your goal (if it is to gain website traffic and find customers), you can make your podcast available to the public. There are many directories in which you can submit your podcast. People will seek out podcasts they may be interested in, and could easily find yours, even if they didn’t realize that your website existed.

You will need an RSS feed added to your podcast if you are to submit it to a directory. This works similarly to a blog directory. This is a very simple procedure; there are many different feeds to choose from- try doing a Google search to find one.

iTunes is most likely the most well-known podcast directory. You can easily add your business podcast to the iTunes store. By following this link: http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/podcast/ you will be directed to Apple’s Support page. Here you will find a form to fill out to have your podcast added. It will also answer any questions you may have.

There are many other directories that you should also submit your podcast. The more places you have it listed, the more likely you are to have visitors find it. Two other large directories are Podcast.net and Podcast.com. By simply doing a Google search, you can come up with many more.

I’m not the first one to chime in on this topic, mostly because I’ve gone both ways and I can make pretty valid arguments from either side. But I’ve finally settled it in my mind which is “best”.
Full RSS feeds are better than summary feeds.

Why?

I can answer that only from the perspective of a skimmer and scanner.

When I browse through my RSS feeds, I’m first looking for titles that draw my interest. If your title doesn’t make me want to read I scroll right past it. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you have a bad title, not every title is going to make everybody want to read. There are just a lot of things that I don’t care about and many feeds I read don’t always have posts that strike my particular fancy.

Once I see a title that makes me think I might want to read on, well, then I start skimming through the post. I might read a few of the first sentences and then start skipping down to link text, headings, boldings, and use those to create a judgment of whether I should take time to actually read the full post.

Summaries don’t have eye appeal

What? Your summary feed doesn’t have headings, boldings, bullets or anything else that catches my eye? Well, you better hope that your first few sentences really grab me. And I mean I really have to be convinced to click through. It’s a mental thing really. I don’t mind clicking if I know I want to read something, but not if I just think I might want to read it. The summary may be partially convincing, but not totally. I’m then forced to move away from my primary screen to another screen because I think I might be interested. You’re making me think to hard.

Countless times, after reading a summary, I’ve been on the edge. I think I’m interested, but not entirely sure. Do I click or do I keep scanning available blog posts. Sometimes I opt for the former, wishing I opted for the latter. Now, more times than not, now, I opt for the latter. If the summary isn’t entirely convincing I won’t click.

It’s a shame really because there are probably some decent insights in there somewhere. But you hid them all behind a not-so-telling summary. Or heck, maybe your summary was dead on and your information just isn’t my cup of tea… if you had a full feed I still might have gleaned a little something of value from your insight.

Are you missing anything by providing a full feed? Sure, you got the click, right? Your traffic numbers go up and maybe you can sell your ad space for a few cents more this month from last… but there is not always value in it for me, which means there is often no real value in it for you.

Do you want to be read or do you want to be visited? Do you want people to hear what you have to say or do you just want your page numbers to go up? Do your yourself a favor, provide a full feed. You’ll be less likely to lose subscribers and you’ll definitely gain more readers.

Stoney deGeyter founded Pole Position Marketing in 1998 working from a home office and has since turned it into a leading [http://www.polepositionmarketing.com]search engine marketing business with a small team of seasoned [http://www.polepositionmarketing.com/about-us.php]Reno SEO marketing experts.
RSS and Blogs are the topics of the moment. Seems like everyone is talking about it. Granted, there is too much hype about RSS and Blogs.

But where there’s hype - there’s interest!

And with good reason - RSS is posed to be the break out technology of 2005. Those who don’t take full advantage of it will be left behind.

If you need convincing - here are 10 reasons why you should put RSS on your site:

1. It’s easy and fast! Not to mention Free! You can use a free service like eBlogger and publish your Blog and RSS feed within minutes. You can even place or publish your Blog/RSS Feed on your own site without knowing ‘html’ or ‘xml’. It’s all done for you!

Repeat - it’s simple to use and very convenient. Publishing your blog is only a few clicks away. (If you need help - just use the link at the end of this article.)

2. Syndicate Your Content. RSS stands for ‘really simple syndication’ and it’s just another way of passing along your information. With the popularity of ‘MyYahoo’ and the ‘Firefox’ browser (which has a built-in RSS feed reader) - syndicating your content has gotten even simpler.

The next version of Windows is reportly scheduled to have a RSS feature. If this happens - RSS will explode.

3. Get Your Content Indexed. Using blogs to publish your content is a neat way of side stepping the regular indexing procedure. It gets your content indexed very quickly in most of the search engines.

Search Engines are constantly on the lookout for ‘fresh content’ - these ‘link rich’ blogs are a good source of this content. Because blogs are on specific topics - they have a concentrated source of good quality informational material to serve up!

4. Instant Contact. Blogs give you instant contact with your readers or viewers. We live in an ‘instant’ society - we want everything five minutes ago. Blogs provide this instant gratification. Readers or viewers using MyYahoo have an instant link to your information or postings.

RSS Feeds will instantly spread your information to all interested parties - bringing in targeted traffic.

5. Building Your List. People who pick up your RSS feed or add you to their MyYahoo site - become your subscribers. You are really building your contact list. Have a popular blog or RSS Feed and you can build a large targeted contact list very quickly.

It might not replace your old opt-in email list - but it can be a lucrative addition to it! Take advantage of all those targeted contacts.

6. Link Building. Blogs are link heavens! Build your links thru blogs. All these links will boost your link popularity and increase your search engine rankings.

Plus, by giving viewers/readers a way of adding your RSS Feed creates targeted links to your site. This reason alone is why your site should have RSS!

7. Viewer/Subscriber Feedback. Instant feedback from your subscribers or viewers is easy with blogs. Creating trust and credibility is so much easier when there is immediate communication between the two parties.

8. Keyword Content Building. Blogs are especially good for building ‘keyword targeted content’ for your site. All these links will boost your keyword rankings in the search engines. Google places a high value on ‘anchor text’ and blogs are a good place to put all those links.

You can also start different blogs targeted at ’specific related keywords’ covering the major topics of your site. Again, search engines love related keyword linking so you can boost your site’s rankings by using blogs.

9. Monetize Your Content. Blogs are an excellent way of monetizing your content. Blog sites like Eblogger (owned by Google) even encourages you to use the ‘adsense code’ in your blogs. If you have a popular blog - this may bring in extra income.

Plus, publishing your ezine or newsletter in a blog can bring in revenue for months if not years to come. All those affiliate links and product promotions get indexed by the search engines and become accessible to a wider audience, i.e. market.

10. Because Everyone Else is Doing It! Might sound a bit ‘Jonesish’ but you do have to keep up with what other web sites are doing. To remain competitive - you MUST put RSS on your site.

Sites without the ‘AddtoMyYahoo’ link or the ‘xml’ button will be the exception rather than the rule in just a few years - if not months. It’s simply another way of getting your information ‘out there’. It’s an opportunity and advantage that you cannot afford to miss.

Proceed without RSS at your own risk!

—————————————————

For the webmaster who is interested in obtaining free traffic from his specific target group with little effort involved, RSS feeds are the way to go. Also known as newsreaders, RSS stands for really simple syndication and is a format for syndicating content from news sites and other websites or weblogs. Utlizing NewsReaders may be a way to keep your site current and bring in the right visitors to your online business.

Most people in eCommerce know that Web 2.0 has changed the way online business works and has the ability to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of online marketing efforts. Still, it seems many are missing out on the great benefits of Web 2.0, because they are overwhelmed by all of the information out there. It can be difficult to decide in what direction to go first.

Learning to incorporate RSS Feeds into your website is a great place to get started. For example, not only can you easily add new, relevant content to your own website often, even daily, you can display your own articles on hundreds of websites with the click of your mouse. This is literally like doing work in your sleep.

With RSS, you no longer have to spend significant time and energy submitting articles to directories. If you aren’t using RSS that means you are likely copying and pasting articles into an HTML file on your site in order to have fresh content. You can completely eliminate such tedious processes by incorporating these automated newsreaders.

Additionally, if you use the syndication process to publish your newsletters, ezine or other publication, other webmasters will pick up your content to display on their websites. It’s the epitome of social marketing at its best.

As competition in the online business world continues to heat-up, it is vital to stay on top of the changes in the industry. Know that the majority of your competitors are either utilizing RSS now or will be in the days to come. It’s quickly becoming the preferred way to distribute news and info.

To have a successful online business, website traffic is a must. One of the key challenges webmasters face if not just getting any old traffic, but finding the visitors who are interested in what you offer. RSS automatically brings in the targeted traffic. And it’s free! So there is really no reason not to incorporate it into your marketing plan.
