I was recently asked by a fellow freelance writer how best to submit articles to the various directories, particularly when some articles have links within the body of the article and the author writes on various subjects. He emphasized in his note to me how the process of submitting can take so long.

Well, to get right to the point: submitting articles isn’t a snap task. It does take time and most article directories today do not allow links within the body of the article. So, if you have articles to submit, any links within the body must be deactivated and/or moved to the resource box [and limited to no more than 3 different links at that].

Going further, I advised the writer to be selective about which directories he selected [better to use those with a strong track record first] and to be careful which category he chooses to place articles under. As it is, many directories use different terminology for the same topics. For example, I writer scads of automotive articles. With some article directories there are automobile sections, others call it “Vehicles” another one uses the term “Transport” while one directory lists its as Home:Cars. Believe me, it can take time to remember, but I use an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of many of my articles and add my notes concerning the submission process.

One final note: I absolutely DO NOT submit everything I write. I get enough free SEO out of what I do submit, but some articles do not need that much exposure. Besides, I would be really ticked off if someone lifted some of my better works off of the internet and used it as their own. Try enforcing copyright violations with someone who is in eastern Europe!

You probably know that submitting articles can boost your website’s popularity in search engines. However, submitting to multiple article sites can be a daunting task. Directories expect different types of formatting. They allow variable numbers of characters in titles, and they may restrict links to as few as 1 - or they may permit several.

Whether you use article submission software or submit your articles manually, there are some advance preparations that will make your job much easier.

Of course before you submit, you must write an article. At the bottom of this page is a handy text template. Although the character counts in the template given here are less than indicated, there is a link in the resource box to an online template with correct parameters.

Compose your article in your favorite word processor; 500-1000 words is an optimal length. Before you begin, set the font to Courier 10 point. This should force your word processor to use plain text characters for quotes, rather than smart quotes and other characters that may cause problems. Allow your typing to wrap naturally. Press the ‘Enter’ key twice between paragraphs or other important blocks of text.

Avoid using double quotation marks. Instead, opt for single quotes [’]. Utilize your word processor’s spell-check and grammar features, and check everything meticulously once your article is ready for submission. Then copy and paste into the template, using Notepad or a similar program.

If you see any strange-looking characters on your screen, perform a search and replace and convert them to plain text equivalents.

Your title should be kept below 60 characters. The line under ‘TITLE’ (*in the online template*), including the leading letters, contains exactly 60. Although most directories permit more, for SEO purposes you should keep your title within this limit. Your title is usually displayed in search engine results. Google will show approximately 68-70 characters. However, article sites often precede the title with a word like ‘Articles’ or ‘Content’. This must be added to the character count.

Once you are satisfied with the title, delete the first line of the template, if you wish.

If suitable, you can utilize the first paragraph of your article as a summary. Otherwise write an appropriate summary in your word processor - and keep it short. A 250-character count is ideal.

The article itself should be copied and pasted below the ‘ARTICLE’ heading.

In the ‘AUTHOR’S NOTE’ area, place your bio or linking information. Do not add html at this point - just bare links. Avoid immediately following a URL with a period or other punctuation. Some article directories will not format your link(s) correctly if you do.

Under ‘NO AUTO LINKS’ copy and paste your bio text, then format the links with html ‘href’ codes for the directories that allow it.

The ‘COPYRIGHT’ section is for an occasional article directory that requires it.

The ‘KEYWORDS’ area is where you enter two lines of comma-separated keywords. The number of characters, including the letters, is 100 (*in the online template*). Some directories allow 100, others up to 200.

Save as a plain text (.txt) file - but don’t exit yet!

Go through your copy and add html, as appropriate. Some directories allow codes for bold, italics, unordered lists, ordered lists, etc. Save the file again - indicating in the filename that this is the HTML version.

For example, you should have two filenames, similar to the following:

How-to-Write-an-Article-HTML.txt

Next set up a spreadsheet. The first time you submit to a new directory, do a manual submission. You can register if required, get a feel for the ‘tone’ of the directory, and check format and linking requirements. Make notes in your spreadsheet. If you use article submission software for subsequent submissions, you will know exactly how to configure your program for each directory.

A major method of rapid link development for Search Engine optimization or website promotion services,is buying quality links. This is a very expensive method and I don’t recommend it unless you have very deep pockets. However you may have no alternative for building fast quality links unless you can offer high value information on your website so that people will not mind adding a link to your site.

Search engines, particularly Google, use link popularity to help evaluate and rank your website. Link popularity refers to the number, quality and relevance of inbound links from other websites to yours. they recognize the number of incoming links in its algorithm that determines placement rankings, they also look for quality Eg. page rank, the more links a website has the better, but the quality I think is more important than the amount. which may explain why you may appear on page 10 while your competitor appears on page 1. The more page rank a linking page has the more authority it lends to you If you use a reciprocal linking service you are probably wasting your time, the sites that you are linked too are from too wide a range of subjects to have any relevance or authority.

Another factor to consider is deep linking, where the in coming link goes directly to an internal page rather than your home page. For example you may have an article that is on yoursite .com /articles/ happydays.html A link from an outside site direct to that page would be deep linking as it is on the third layer of your site. Deep linking is good for your site as the overall page rank takes into account not only the links to your home page but also the total links to the site.

Google has become skilled at detecting un-natural linking patterns; links to a website whose only purpose is to improve Google ranking. Because of this many SEO experts are going back to fundamentals and using techniques like article writing to develop natural links What is a natural link ? It is a link that originates from an outside site that is one way, and has a page rank to give it authority. If you build enough quality and relevant links to your site you’re site will still have traffic before, during, and after algorithm changes.
