Having a couple of high ranking links and no others is a big red flag. Any site that grows naturally will have a pyramidal distribution of links with the greatest number of links at or near the bottom of the ranking ladder.

So you don’t want your site to get black holed but you do want to accelerate the rate at which your website climbs the search engine rankings and hence see the benefits of free targeted traffic to your website. If you’re an internet marketer, then Digg, Squidoo, Hubpages, StumbleUpon, Propeller, and a hundred or so other sites are probably one your most important assets on the Web right now. I can create a site on my own domain tonight, post a few pages to several social bookmarking sites, and create a 50 - 100 visitor a day phenomenon that just keeps on rolling and building.

Let me tell you why this works and a little about how to use it.

Google hates new sites! Well, “hates” might be a little extreme, but you know what I mean. Let’s just say, Google prefers older sites. The idea is the older the site, the more probability that the site has content that satisfies Google’s users.

Remember Google has one and only one goal in life–to deliver the perfect search results every time. New sites are unproven, and less likely to do this.

That presents a problem for those of us who make new sites on a monthly, if not weekly basis. How can you get your site seen, how can you get the traffic, if Google consistently ranks older sites higher than your new site?

Enter Web 2.0!

Let’s use Squidoo as an example.

Squidoo is a site that let’s you build mini websites on their platform. Although, from your point of view, you’re building a new site, Google doesn’t look at it that way. Squidoo sites are ranked very highly in the search results.

If you Digg a webpage on your new site, your webpage might not show up in the search results, but your Digg post has a great chance of ranking highly–which is just as well. People will see the Digg post and click through to your site.

When I build a site, or work on getting traffic to a new site, I use these Web 2.0 platforms to gather traffic and send it to my new site. I’ll use Digg, StumbleUpon, Propeller and the like to create buzz.

This is essentially viral marketing.

But wait! There’s more.

Not everything is going to make it to Digg’s front page. There seems to be a small number of topics that do. That’s because Digg’s users are a fairly narrow demographic. If, however, your site addresses one of Digg’s pet topics, then you can create a ton of server crushing traffic by getting people to vote your page up.

I know this is gaming the system, but isn’t that what marketing is all about?

I was recently asked by a fellow freelance writer how best to submit articles to the various directories, particularly when some articles have links within the body of the article and the author writes on various subjects. He emphasized in his note to me how the process of submitting can take so long.

Well, to get right to the point: submitting articles isn’t a snap task. It does take time and most article directories today do not allow links within the body of the article. So, if you have articles to submit, any links within the body must be deactivated and/or moved to the resource box [and limited to no more than 3 different links at that].

Going further, I advised the writer to be selective about which directories he selected [better to use those with a strong track record first] and to be careful which category he chooses to place articles under. As it is, many directories use different terminology for the same topics. For example, I writer scads of automotive articles. With some article directories there are automobile sections, others call it “Vehicles” another one uses the term “Transport” while one directory lists its as Home:Cars. Believe me, it can take time to remember, but I use an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of many of my articles and add my notes concerning the submission process.

One final note: I absolutely DO NOT submit everything I write. I get enough free SEO out of what I do submit, but some articles do not need that much exposure. Besides, I would be really ticked off if someone lifted some of my better works off of the internet and used it as their own. Try enforcing copyright violations with someone who is in eastern Europe!

The concept of shared online bookmarking dates back to April 1996 with the launch of itList.com. Within the next three years online bookmark services became competitive, with venture-backed companies like Backflip, Blink,[citation needed] Clip2, Hotlinks, Quiver, and others entering the market. Lacking viable models for making money, most of this early generation of social bookmarking companies failed as the dot-com bubble burst. The contemporary concepts of social bookmarking and tagging took root with the launch of the web site oneview in 1999[1] and del.icio.us, in September of 2003.

Functional Overview

In a social bookmarking system, users store lists of Internet resources, which they find useful. Often, these lists are publicly accessible, and other people with similar interests can view the links by category, tags, or even randomly. Some social bookmarking systems allow for privacy on a per-bookmark basis.

They also categorize their resources by the use of informally assigned, user-defined keywords or tags (see folksonomy). This allows subscribers to become aware of new resources for a given topic, as they are noted, tagged, and classified by other users.

Disadvantages

There are drawbacks to such tag-based systems as well: no standard set of keywords (also known as controlled vocabulary), no standard for the structure of such tags (e.g. singular vs. plural, capitalization, etc.), mistagging due to spelling errors, tags that can have more than one meaning, unclear tags due to synonym/antonym confusion, highly unorthodox and “personalized” tag schemas from some users, and no mechanism for users to indicate hierarchical relationships between tags (e.g. a site might be labeled as both cheese and cheddar, with no mechanism that might indicate that cheddar is a refinement or sub-class of cheese).

The separate (but related) tagging and social bookmarking services are, however, evolving rapidly, and these shortcomings could possibly be addressed in the near future.
