Slim lining and fine tuning your blog doesn’t have to be difficult. Having a slim lined and fine-tuned blog is a never ending battle. It’s hard work and you have to constantly fine-tune your blog in every aspect, whether it be monetizing, seo, or for traffic reasons. Fine-tuning your blog can help in various ways. Here is a list as to how to slim-line your blog and design it to be more user friendly.

1. Use categories. They will help your audience find what they are looking for a lot easier. They will appreciate you more for that.

2. Get rid of the cluttered look. Everything in your blog should have a proper “place”. It makes your blog look more professional and not something that you just put together overnight or something.

3. Unused links or dead links can be frustrating to users. Weekly checks of your links should just about do it. Remove or replace any dead links as soon as you can.

4. Don’t burden your site/blog with a lot of pictures or movies. If it takes your page a long time to download see what you can take out that won’t sacrifice the quality for your users, users will usually go the other way if it takes too long. Download time should be 1 second or less, depending of course on the users connection!

5. Keep your articles well organized. Looking for an article that should be in one category and finding it another kind of defeats the purpose for categories.

6. Blogging layout and articles should follow the K.I.S.S. (Keep it simple silly) method. Beginners (like myself) don’t understand a lot of the technical jargon. If you can, put it in layman’s terms. If it’s meant to be for beginners, make it for beginners.

7. Keep your “super” links and ditch the old ones or not so good ones. This will make your blog/site more search engine friendly by keeping the URL’s found on your blog to a minimum.

8. Keywords should be kept to a minimum of 20 in your meta tags. If you want to know how to insert or use meta tags for search enging optimization (seo) please feel free to look at my article on adding meta tags to your site/blog.

9. Design of your blog/site is key when users want an easy to use interface. Providing and easy to use interface to users lets them browse, link and subscribe a lot easier to your site. Visit your site and test it to see if it’s user friendly. Compare it with other sites and look at the differences, then write them down and see what you can improve on.

10. Provide and RSS feed so that your users can subscribe keep up with your articles and always be “in the know” about your blog or articles.

These ten tips should help you out in a small way. Maybe there are a few points that I missed again, please feel free to add. Like I said before, fine-tuning your blog is an almost weekly if not daily (for some of us) routine. Your users will appreciate you for it and it will help your blog out at the same time. http://www.moonburst-tones.blogspot.com

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) has become a popular term and anyone who spends time online will come across the term. SEO is more like a mind set that every website owner who cares for his website and the incoming visitors must develop. SEO skills can be developed easily and a lot of information is available online or one could just go to one of the SEO conferences and get the hang of it all. Small websites can be optimized in-house itself if there is the time and resources, or by outsourcing the optimization work to SEO professionals.

Though the number of techniques and tools for SEO keeps increasing there are some major skills that must be developed by anyone interested seriously in SEO. Leading SEO gurus do realize the importance of the fact that an effective SEO professional must be a person who can always see the big picture and need not be a specialist at only one thing. Here is the list of essential ethical SEO skills that may be mastered by the SEO professional:
Link building skill
Keyword analysis
Copywriting
Account management
HTML skills
On page SEO tactics like tagging/titling etc
Marketing/sales strategies planning / SMO
Web analytics
Server side management
Online public relation skills
Awareness of all SEO tools/techniques
Blog marketing
Ability to research/search online
Social SEO media

For the SEO professional it is also important to at least get to know about the various black hat SEO techniques but it is more important to make a conscious decision not to develop those skills as it is unethical and not fair game.

First, you must be patient with yourself as you learn to apply, test and use article submission methods to create links galore for your website. Understand that it can be time consuming. However, doing so will increase your online traffic and potential profits. Article submission is the best means for your website promotional campaigns. You have to pay attention to how you submit your articles to get ahead. It is a great business tool. Aim for wide-ranging promotion of your articles by submitting them to numerous directories. They will review and publish if they find the material suitable.

Here you will find article submissions methods to create links galore. Remember that you are building a site promotion campaign and not a profile for yourself. Always, use the same pen name on any directory article submission for the exact same article. Doing otherwise can cause potential copyright misunderstandings, that you have no time for. For example, do not submit the same article using two different names; this will only cause confusion between the directories.

Use your keywords in all the directories submission fields. Pay special attention that all of this information is properly displayable within the correct field. This increases your chance of ranking higher in an online search. Consider some of the many forms of text and content software to increase the process of repeating keywords while writing your content.

Be sure that your articles and information are SEO or search engine optimized for the very best results. Remember to include the benefit of reading your article in the title; these types of titles rank high, while being read more often by potential clients. Take time to use short paragraphs and subheadings when suitable within your article text. When you give tips, create them in their own paragraphs. Doing so will give the article a much more appealing appearance and make for easy reading.

Pay attention to your keywords and keyword density. There are tools available to aid you in finding the best keywords for your content subject. Know the terms of service of any directory you open an account with, find out if they allow you to apply hyperlinks into your article text. Doing so will save you time, in case they do not. However, you should be able to include your click-able links in the resource box.

Always, use HTML when placing your links, as this will increase the possibility of the link you display is indeed click-able and will take potential viewers to your own website. Any information in the resource box of directories is for the project. All information should be an invitation to join you at your website to learn more free information. When you have free items of interest, the resource box is a great place for such offerings.

Determine whether you will be submitting articles by the means of manual submission, article submission software, paid submission services or manual paid submission. Take your time while following these article submission methods and they will help you increase your website exposure and potential profits. Submit your articles well and often. If you do, soon you will be an article submission method wizard with links galore.

When it comes to optimizing your website, the first and most important aspect of SEO is choosing keywords for your website. Choosing keywords is surprisingly more difficult than it seems. There are three major points to consider when choosing keywords for your site;

• Search popularity

• Site/content relevance

• Competition

When trying to find good keywords for your website, one of the first things you need to consider is the keywords search popularity. The keywords that you choose need to be words or phrases that are searched often. If you choose a word that is never searched then it really doesn’t matter how relevant the word is because nobody is looking for it anyways. For example, if your website is about puppy adoptions, you would not want to choose a key phrase like “cheap puppy adoptions” even though it sounds like it might be a good keyword/phrase. That phrase is not searched hardly at all so it is not going to benefit you a whole lot to optimize your site for that keyword; instead it would be better to try something like puppy rescue, or puppy rescue adoption or even just puppy adoption. There are many tools online (some for free, some for a price) that can help you find how much a keyword or phrase is searched.

Keywords cannot only be chosen based on search popularity because you also need to make sure that the keyword or phrase that you choose is relevant to your website content. When writing the content for your website, you need to try and include your keyword or phrase as often as possible without making your content look awkward. In other words, it needs to be a smooth read for your visitors as well as for the search engine spiders. When a search engine spider crawls through your site it is looking for the keywords that you have specified in your meta tags and it is verifying that your site is actually about those keywords.

The third aspect of choosing your keywords is to look at the competition for those keywords. If your website is brand new, or even fairly new, you do not want to choose a keyword that is super competitive (competitive meaning it is searched a whole lot like “real estate” or “web design”). The reason for this is because your goal is to get your website up on the first couple pages of the search engine and there is no way a search engine is going to rank your site first on a keyword that hundreds of thousands of companies are optimizing for. You want to choose a word that is searched often but not too often. Going back to the puppy adoption example, it would be better for you to optimize your content for a word/phrase like “puppy adoption” or “puppy rescue adoption” than a phrase like “dog adoption” or “pet adoption” because these keywords are incredibly competitive and there is no way your website is going to get ranked on these keywords (at least not for a couple years).

As you can see, there is a lot more to choosing keywords than just choosing them and there is also a lot more to search engine optimization than just choosing keywords. You also have to look at your html code, link building, amount of pages/content, etc.

To get your website found by the S.E, you need to adopt a well planned marketing strategy, however one thing to keep in mind is that you should not rely solely on S.E as your primary source of traffic.

Keyword research is critical if you want to have a successful blog or website, if you want people to find your website and you want your web visitors to be interested in what you have to sell.

Check on your Competition.

How to Find the right keywords and phrases, can be daunting, The trick is to start slowly.

Another quick method of how to find keywords is to let the search engines gather the results for you. You can spot what your competition is doing in order to gain the top rankings in your market, also pay attention to the keyword placement on their sites.

Another shortcut on how to find keywords can be found with tools like seodigger.com and spyfu.com. Seodigger allows you to identify the phrases that competitors are ranking for organically and SpyFu displays what phrases are being used with Pay Per Click advertising.

The first step in this process is to create a list of potential keywords. Brainstorm all the words you think a customer would type into their search box when trying to find your website. This includes thinking of phrases that are broad and targeted, single and multi-word.

Have a look at your competitor’s Meta Keyword tag. What words are they targeting? How can you expand on their keyword list to make yours better?

Another great place on how to find keywords and phrases is in the Web 2.0 media.

For web sites that are involved with marketing through optimizing Social media, the use of tags as keywords can reveal the concepts consumers associate with the kind of content being promoted.

The most popular tags, or keywords, are often reported on the respective social media sites such as on the del.icio.us tag page, StumbleUpon, Digg etc.

Start Your Keywords Research.

Researching keywords helps anticipate the demand for topics and to reveal the particular phrases being searched on.

Now that you have your list, your next step is to determine the activity for each of your proposed keywords. You want to narrow your list to only include highly attainable, sought-after phrases that will bring the most qualified traffic to your site.

By inputting your proposed keywords into a keyword research tool, you can quickly learn how many users are conducting searches for that term every day, how many of those searches actually converted, and other important analytical information.

There are lots of great tools out there to help you determine how much activity your keywords are receiving.

Overture Keyword Selector Tool: Overture’s Keyword Selector tools shows you how many searches have been conducted over the last month for a particular phrase and lists alternative search terms you may have forgotten about.

Wordtracker: Wordtracker is a paid-use tool that lets you look up popular keyword phrases to determine their activity and popularity among competitors. Their top 1000 report lists the most frequently searched for terms, while their Competition .

Google AdWords Keyword Tool: Google’s keyword PPC tool doesn’t provide actual search numbers for keywords. Instead, it displays a colored bar, giving users only an approximation.

Google Suggest: Google Suggest is a great way to find synonyms and related word suggestions that may help you expand your original list.

Finalizing your list.

Now that you learnt how to find keywords, you will have your initial list of words and have tested their activity, it’s time to narrow down the field and decide which terms will make it into your final keyword list.

The first step in narrowing down your list is to go through and highlight the terms that most closely target the subject and theme of your web site. These are the terms you want to hold on to. Delete all words that are not relevant to your site or that you don’t have sufficient content to support.

Targeted terms are often easier to rank for and help bring qualified traffic. They also make you a subject matter expert to the search engines, since the targeted terms strengthen the theme created with the broader phrases.

Finally

Keep in mind as your customer’s and your site’s needs change over time, so will your keywords. It’s important to keep monitoring your keywords and make tweaks as necessary. Doing so will allow you to stay ahead of your competition and keep moving forward now that you know how how to find keywords.

When you here the term Keyword Density you may wonder what it is? Keyword density is the number of times the keyword you selected to highlight on your web page has been used. It is important not to use a keyword over and over again but should appear in important places on your web page.

By repeating a keyword on every line or repeat it over and over again then your site may be rejected as a spam or artificial site.

As you may have already discovered keyword density is described as a percentage of your word content on a webpage or article.

Think of it this way you have a web page that you have written and it has 500 words on it, you use a keyword 25 times within the content of that page. Simply put the keyword density would be 500 divided by 25 which would equal to .05 or 5% of the page content.

Search engines acceptable standard for keyword density is between 3-5% so you will be recognized by the search engines. Try never to exceed the 5% limit.

The 5% rule should apply to each and ever page on your site. Not just the one where you have optimized the page for that specific keyword. The density relates to all products and services that you have on your site.

Ways to check the keyword density on your site:

When you are finished writing your copy for your page or article copy and paste the content into a word processor.

Within the word processor select the Word Count function in the word processor and write down the number of words on that page.

Go to the Find function and type in the keyword in the Find section and then in the Replace section type in the same word. If you use the same word your copy won’t change.

Once the replace function is completed then you should have a count of the number of places the same word has been replaced. This gives you the number of times that keyword has been used on that specific page.

When you have the number of keywords on the page then you can calculate the keyword density for that word on your page.

So that’s it quite simple but effective.

Enjoy.

The Top Seven WordPress Blogging Mistakes

Let’s look at the top seven mistakes new bloggers (and some experienced ones) make when setting up a new blog. I know all about these mistakes, because I’ve made them too.

Mistake One: Not Hosting Your Own Blog

Own your information! Don’t let WordPress or Blogger host your blog. You will get no benefit from it and you will not look professional.

Mistake Two: No Clearly Defined Purpose For The Blog

This is the primary mistake that many new bloggers make. They start blogging without thinking about why they’re creating a blog. Define your purpose before you set up your new blog.

Mistake Three: A Title With No Thought

Make your title reflect the purpose of your blog and use keywords when possible. The title is important for your readers but also for search engines.

Mistake Four: No Keywords Selected For The Blog

Do keyword research on your niche. Know your keywords and use your keywords. Don’t forget to add them to the meta tag for keywords too. Keep a list of your keywords close and refer to them as you are writing your posts and titles for your posts.

Mistake Five: No Description For The Blog

You need a little ‘elevator’ speech for your blog. Tell what it is about using as many keywords as possible. Add this to you meta description tag. This is what will show up in the search engines after you are indexed for your keywords just after the title of the search result.

Mistake Six: No Marketing Plan To Get Traffic

While a blog has natural traffic generators like RSS built-in, pinging capabilities and the ability for other people to comment, you’ll still need to market the blog. Decide on two or three ways you’ll market this particular blog, and then do it. You’ll get the traffic you want.

Mistake Seven: Focus On Traffic, Not On Content

It’s a natural mistake to want all the traffic you can get. But what if there’s nothing on the blog to snag interest once the traffic gets there? Focus on content, then on traffic, and when you have content, focus on both - you can never have enough traffic, but it’s your content that draws your visitors and makes money for you.

What would happen if…? I’m a person to always ask that question. I love testing and tracking to see what factors can improve or worsen a situation. So, it was only natural for me to track the moves of a little experiment I did involving SEO copywriting recently. I’ll gladly share my findings with you.

Before I do, however, I want to make a couple of things very clear. The outcome of this experiment will not be the same for every keyphrase on every page of every site. There are too many unknown factors at play in the overall SEO equation. Not to mention, all keyphrases are not the same, and all sites are not the same. In addition, this experiment takes no account of link popularity, which is a huge factor in achieving high rankings. With that said, let me show you how I took the home page of one of my sites - that didn’t even rank in the top 50 - and caused it to rank in the top 10.

First of all, I’m not a big fan of checking rankings on a regular basis. I don’t run ranking reports for all my sites to be sure they are all in the positions I want them in for every given keyphrase. I’ll do it from time to time just to satisfy my own occasional curiosity. This experiment began when I noticed the home page of one of my sites was ranking highly for a keyphrase that didn’t seem to appear anywhere in the text. Upon further investigation, I saw that the keyphrase was included in the ALT tags (a.k.a. image attribute tags) and that it was also included in the title tag.

I knew ALT tags previously carried a lot of weight with the engines, but had been downgraded in importance because site owners had badly abused the tag. Had ALT tags been reinstated in their level of importance? I decided to find out.

Keyword #1 was currently in the ALT tags and the title tag, so I decided to eliminate the keyword in the title tag. This would let me see if the ALT tags alone could hold the position in the search engine results pages (SERPs). To make things more interesting, I also decided to research and find a keyword that was a little more competitive and insert it into the title tag. On the same day I removed Keyword #1 from the title tag, I inserted Keyword #2. My home page was not ranked in the top 50 at that time for Keyword #2.

A few days later, the Googlebot came by and boosted my home page to position #18 for Keyword #2. Not bad! The page fell one spot (from #17 to #18) for Keyword #1 since the removal of the phrase from the title tag.

Keep in mind, these are not the most competitive keywords ever known. They each got between 100 to 200 searches a day. Also, the home page of this particular site had been (and still is) well ranked for years for other keyphrases and had a positive legacy with Google.

Five days later, Keyword #2 was moved up three notches to a ranking of #14 while Keyword #1 stayed the same. Things remained in their status quo for roughly 10 days and then began to shift again. Keyword #1, the original that was previously in both the ALT tags and the title tag, vanished completely. It was not found in the top 50. Keyword #2, that was only found in the title tag and nowhere else, dropped to position #25.

Four days later, Keyword #2 was back up in the rankings and was now at #16. To see if I could improve rankings further, I began to make small tweaks to the page attributes. I added Keyword #2 to the ALT tags (taking the places where Keyword #1 had once been), and I also added Keyword #2 to the body copy. The keyphrase was added to one, bold sub-headline and at three places within the body copy: none of which were above the fold. It was not added to any primary headlines that used tags, and no keyword density formula was followed for the body copy. No other pages on my site used this term as anchor text in links pointing to the home page. That gave the page keyword placement in the:

· Title tag

· ALT tags

· Body copy

Seven days later, the home page hit the top 10 for Keyword #2!

So, what does all this mean? Simple. There is no single primary factor in search engine rankings. It takes balance, testing and tracking to find out what works for your particular pages. Your best bet is to do exactly what I did… begin one step at a time and track your progress. Did something cause a positive movement? Keep it. If something causes a negative shift, take it out.

I’m not finished with this page yet. I’ll keep trying different things from time to time just to see what happens. Maybe I’ll add anchor text links from the internal pages to the home page. I might try writing articles with keyword-rich anchor text links to help boost the rankings more. There are many acceptable practices I can implement for this page (or any page) that will allow me to observe the shifts in ranking. As the old saying goes, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” A diversified approach to SEO copywriting that includes tags, copy and links is always a wise start down the road to top 10 rankings.

What are keywords?

Keywords describe what the pages in your site are about. A couple of the keywords we are using to describe this page are SEO copywriting and search engine optimization copywriting.

Finding keywords for your site can be a long, laborious but pretty straightforward process depending on what your site offers. A site selling simple building bricks for example may have fewer keywords than a site selling a huge range of perfumes.

Keywords are what your visitors will type into the search engines to find information, a service or a place to buy a product from. If your site is one of the first they see, there’s a higher chance they will visit it. Before you can begin your SEO copywriting you need some decent keywords.

5 tips for finding keywords

1. Look at your site

Think about what it is your site offers or sells. Using the brick example again - does your company manufacture bricks? Do you sell them to building firms? What type of bricks do you sell? Do you send out samples of bricks? This information can form the basis of your keyword list.

2. See what everyone else is up to

Pay your competitors a visit and check out their pages. Which words are they mentioning a little too much? Which words do they have in bold or italics? What services do they offer? You may just get a few more ideas to add to your list.

3. Ask people

Presumably you’ve thought about your website for pretty much every spare moment since you decided to set it up, so you may be a little too close to the subject to spot all the potential keywords. Ask your family, friends and colleagues to think about what your site is about and they may come up with some juicy keywords you’d not thought of.

4. Spellings, hyphens and plurals

When we compiled the keywords for http://www.pureinkcreative.com we had the added complication of the main words which describe what we do (copywriting, proofreading and copyediting) being able to be spelled in a variety of ways. Copy writing, copy-writing and copywriting where all valid keywords and all of them were being searched for. However, many search engines recognize a hyphen as a space so that cut it down to ‘copywriting’ and ‘copy writing’ and a lot less people were looking for ‘copy writing’ so we scrapped that keyword and went with ‘copywriting’. How’s that sentence for keyword density?

Spelling and plurals are also important. At the time of writing, web content writer received 11 searches a day but web content writers received 25 searches a day. Search engines will look for the singular of any plural word which is spelled the same, so sticking to web content writers ensures both terms are covered.

UK and American spelling should also be considered. On this site search engine optimization is always spelled with a ‘z’ instead of an ’s’ as the American spelling had many more searches than the English version.

5. Keyword tools

There are plenty of useful keyword tools to help you create your keyword list - two of the most popular ones are Yahoo! Search Marketing and Wordtracker. These easy to use tools will let you know how many people are typing your keywords into the search engines and which search engines they’re using. MSN also has a useful keyword tool which contains a Seasonal Keyword Forecaster to let you know what terms are popular at different times of year. You can also create a list of keywords using Google’s help. Between them, you’re bound to come up with a good, competitive list of keywords to optimize your pages.

Need more traffic to your blog? Check out these 4 simple ways to get there.

Building a Blog has never been as easy as it is today. With applications like Wordpress you can have your Blog online in no time. You don’t have to hire a coder like in the old days. Now your hardest decision is what template to choose.

Even though is has become a lot easier many people find that once they build a Blog no one ever comes to it. I mean, they set up a ping list, added it to a few social bookmarking sites, got some backlinks and put links on Digg but they find that through all of their efforts, they still have very few visitors.

So, what is the trick? Building backlinks, social bookmarking and the other most common ways to drive traffic to your Blog require work. Just registering accounts on all of the most popular social bookmarking sites will take up a full day. Now, I’m not saying this isn’t needed. In fact, it is something I do with every Blog post I make. You don’t need to get too caught up in this.

Organic traffic is great, if you can get it. Just think how many people go to Google to search for what your Blog is about versus how many people go to a social bookmarking site to do their search. If you can get their attention in Google then you can tap in to a pipeline of visitors.

Okay, so how do you do this? Is it Adwords? No, it’s not using Adwords. In fact I have tried using PPC and have failed miserably. Honestly I just don’t get the PPC world. But, I do get the organic traffic world.

Here are the tips you need to get a flood of organic traffic:

1.) Make sure you permalinks are setup as /%postname/. Why? The reason is if for instance you write a post titled “Buy Blue Candles” your URL will be something like “yoursite/Buy-Blue-Candles”. Now when a user types in the keyword “Where to Buy Blue Candles” then in the users search results the keywords they are looking for are highlighted which draws their eyes to it and gives you a better chance that they will click on your link. We all know that more highlighted words equals more prominent in the results which means you will stand out more and get more clicks then if you did not stand out.

Remember, before modifying anything in your Wordpress Blog be sure to make a backup of any file and the database you are working on. It would be a shame to see all that hard work lost.

2.) Before posting, do keyword research and then change the “slug” for your post to include a combination of the keywords you have found. For instance, if you write a post for a Canon A570IS camera, simply perform keyword research on the term “A570IS” you will probably find variations like “Canon Powershot A570IS”. This is great, but don’t stop there. Try to find common misspellings. For instance Canon is commonly misspelled as Cannon.

If you are posting something as specific as a model number like above “A570IS” then try to search on variations of that model number. For instance, try searching for “A570″,”570IS”, or “570″ and include all variations in the slug.

I know having your keywords in the URL doesn’t make a difference in rankings right? I have heard this also. Truthfully I have not found that to be the case. I have ranked just by having the keywords in the URL and not found in the title, the body or even in the tags for the site. In any case, having them there doesn’t hurt and like before those keywords will be highlighted in the search results.

3.) If you are using Wordpress don’t forget to install the Simple-Tags plugin. It’s incredible. Use the keywords you find in your keyword research and create tags with each of them. The Simple-Tags plugin works great for this. Also, each keyword will be its own URL and hyperlinked on your page. This not only give you more indexed pages but gives you a better chance that if your main post doesn’t rank well for your keywords then maybe your tag page will.

4.) Use the Google XML Sitemaps plugin for Wordpress. All you have to do is manually build your sitemap first and then it updates it automatically when something changes. It’s one of the best. No, this won’t have the visitors knocking down your door but it lets Google and Yahoo know where to look to index your pages. And if the bots don’t have to go searching then it will make your life much easier and you will get indexed faster.

Putting these four things into action has resulted in more traffic per month than all of my Web 2.0, article marketing, and link sharing strategies combined. I get 300 times more traffic from Google than any other strategy I have in place. But, don’t take my word for it. Give it a try yourself. You will be glad you did.
